   Résumé
   Au début du XIXe siècle, la jeune Becky programme son ascension sociale en manipulant son entourage. Engagée comme gouvernante, elle épouse le fils de famille Raw-Jdon. Plus tard, elle séduit le marquis de Steyne. Ses stratagèmes démasqués, elle se consolera auprès de Joseph Sedley, le frère de son amie Amelia.
   Commentaire
   Premier long métrage tourné en Technicolor, Becky Sharp fut attaqué à sa sortie pour avoir dénaturé l'œuvre monumentale de Thackeray. Du moins donna-t-il à Mamoulian, toujours friand d'innovation formelle, l'occasion d'utiliser la couleur à des fins dramatiques: en témoigne la «montée» de la couleur rouge dans la séquence du bal interrompu par l'annonce de Waterloo. Mais la splendeur de la palette ne compense pas entièrement le statisme du récit, surtout dans sa seconde moitié. Ces aléas sont partiellement sauvés par le cabotinage de Miriam Hopkins, qui fut plus nuancée sous la direction de Lubitsch, ou de Mamoulian lui-même (Docteur Jekyll et M. Hyde).
